Priority-Based Electricity Consumption Scheduling Using Greedy Optimization in Residential Areas

Abstract

The growing demand for home electricity necessitates innovative approaches to balance the consumption of energy with cost-saving. In this paper, a priority scheduling system for home appliances using a greedy optimization algorithm is proposed to minimize energy expenditure without compromising user comfort. By dynamically assigning priority to devices based on need and usage patterns, the algorithm allocates optimal operating times to high-priority devices (e.g., refrigerators, lighting) when tariff rates are lowest and off-peak period assignment for low-priority devices (e.g., washing machines, entertainment systems). Greedy approach imposes household power capacity constraint satisfaction as well as budget constraints by iteratively taking optimally cost-minimal scheduling decisions. Testing in several different residential environments demonstrates a 22-30% reduction in monthly electricity costs and a 15-25% reduction in peak-load demand compared to unoptimized consumption. The system also provides actionable feedback for load shifting, enabling consumers to avoid grid overloads and adopt environmentally friendly consumption habits. This work demonstrates the potential of algorithmic-based prioritization in transforming residential energy management without compromising convenience of lifestyle. © 2025 IEEE.
